“Catchy is great on the first listen, but it’s exhausting. You can have moments that have that universal appeal, but for me, what’s great is to pull a bait and switch. Going through the process of trying to make a proper recording of your own work, you learn a lot about writing. Hearing a song a hundred times, you get bored with the catchy stuff. That’s a trick that’s helped my songwriting: Don’t be satisfied with catchy, be a little more ambitious. “
